Rather than discussing the technology purely in terms of potential, organisations can increasingly examine how it performs in real-world environments.
The expansion of facial recognition does not come without questions.
Biometric data is particularly sensitive, and organisations using the technology need to consider how it is collected, processed and protected.
For law enforcement, the UK Government has been considering the legal framework surrounding the use of facial recognition and other biometric technologies, with a consultation on a new framework running earlier this year.
The debate is therefore not simply about whether facial recognition works.
It is also about when it should be used, what safeguards should be in place and how organisations can maintain public confidence in its deployment.
